Iain considers accompaniment to be his vocation and is at his happiest making music alongside a soloist or in a group of musicians.
Iain works regularly with a number of high-calibre musicians performing concerts, recitals and gigs in a variety of styles and in all manner of performance venues.
Since 2007 Iain has been performing regularly all over the country in Brassed Up! concerts alongside virtuoso multi-brass instrumentalist James Stretton. Visit the youtube channel orichalcum1 to see more of their exploits. (And find out why it is called 'orichalcum'...)
Other regular accompaniment roles for Iain include Sandwell Youth Choir, accompanying ballet classes at Elmhurst Ballet School and concerts for the Jo Dwyer Singers.
Study and Qualifications
Iain studied music at Birmingham University gaining a BMus (hons) majoring in composition. Further studies in composition followed at the Royal Academy of Music on the MMus course. Subsequently Iain decided his true vocation was performing and studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Piano Accompaniment at the Birmingham Conservatoire under Simon Nicholls and Robert Markham.
Iain is also a qualified teacher with a PGCE and qualified teacher status.
Learning to play any musical instrument is generally thought to be a highly beneficial activity in many ways. The discipline learned through the effort of practice, the physical coordination of fingers and arms, the interpretation of musical notation, and above all the enjoyment and fulfilment of successfully playing a piece of music by oneself or in a group - these are all aspects of learning a musical instrument that are richly rewarding in themselves and can have a positive implications on other areas of our lives.
For children the balance of skills and the sense of achievement gained through learning an instrument can be a real confidence builder, and the benefits can often be seen in schoolwork also. For adults it can be the chance to realise a forgotten or neglected ambition (if the number of people who approach me and say 'I've always wanted to play the piano' is anything to go by).
Beginners
If you or your child is a beginner, Iain will guide you through the process of learning the notes of the piano and how to read musical notation in a clear and logical way. You will learn some appealing and memorable tunes and Iain will play along with you most of the time in lessons so you gain confidence quickly and also learn to play in a musical way.
Lapsed Pianists
If you have played the piano before then Iain can help you back into piano playing by finding an appropriate motivation and then helping you achieve your goal. It may be you just want to be able to play that piece you never quite mastered, you want to play a certain pop song that you like, or maybe you want to achieve the next grade. Whatever the reason for wanting to play again, I can show you how to practise effectively so that you really make progress and teach you the technique to make it seem easy.
Iain teaches all styles of playing including classical, pop and jazz (including improvisation) and will always endeavour to tailor lessons to each individual pupil's needs, while maintaining an emphasis on good technique and effective practice. Iain currently teaches part-time for King Edward VI Aston school in Birmingham and Sandwell LEA besides maintaining a private teaching roster.
Iain is based in Birmingham, UK. Please get in touch if you would like a quote to play at an event, for accompaniment of exams, rehearsals or recitals, or regarding piano lessons if you are local to Birmingham.
