Originally from Bolton, Lancashire, Iain quickly established himself as a first class pianist and also gained membership of the National Youth Orchestra on the trombone. Throughout his childhood and adolescence the two instruments vied for prominence in his musical life. Iain declined the offer to study trombone at the Royal College of Music in favour of the piano, studying instead at Birmingham University, taking piano lessons at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Whilst studying for his degree he also discovered a flair for composition. Post-graduate studies in composition followed at the Royal Academy of Music under Simon Bainbridge and Dominic Muldowney, with piano as a second study under Graeme Humphrey. In 2006 Iain teamed up with virtuoso multi-brass instrumentalist James Stretton to form the recital duo Orichalcum – World of Brass. Today equally at home with classical or jazz, he is much sought after as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician. Qualifications Iain holds a degree in music (BMus (Hons)) from Birmingham University. He has achieved dipABRSM on the piano, and also holds a grade 8 distiction on trombone. He is a qualified teacher, holding a PGCE in secondary music, and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).
